Abstract

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has developed guidelines for the use of the prophylactic human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for the prevention of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer. Recent increases in incidence and survival of oropharyngeal cancers in the United States have been attributed to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The epidemiology of oral HPV among people who use drugs or HIV-positive is not well described. The objective of this study is to determinants of oral human papillomavirus (HPV) among HIV-positive women were investigated by testing them for HPV DNA. At interview information was obtained and a oropharngeal lavage sample was collected for polymerase chain reaction-based HPV testing.
